The German-Russian Exchange in St. Petersburg (NRO) is a social platform for organising international volunteer, youth, expert, educational and activist exchanges of various formats. The NRO helps to strengthen peace, friendship and harmony between the peoples of Russia, Germany and other countries, contribute to the civil society development through international exchanges and support for civil initiatives in Russia and Europe.

German-Russian Exchange (NRO) in St. Petersburg, like its partner organisation Deutsch-Russischer Austausch (DRA) in Berlin, was founded in 1992 by a group of activists and volunteers from Germany. Here you can read extracts and a collection of interviews (in Russian) that were conducted in 2013 with the first German and Russian directors and volunteers of NRO and other organisations in St. Petersburg about their work in St. Petersburg in the 1990s.

Throughout the years of history of the NRO, people, priorities, projects, styles and workloads have changed in it, and legal entities have been registered and re-registered. However, the main mission and tasks have remained the same since its foundation: it still aims to develop international exchanges and volunteer work, to support civil initiatives and organisations that are the basis of an open and democratic society in Europe. Here you can find photos and materials from the history of the German-Russian Exchange in St. Petersburg since 1992, prepared for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the NRO in 2017.

For more than 27 years of work in NRO programmes, a huge number of short-term and long-term volunteers, experts, journalists, students, schoolchildren and activists have participated, who are now working on their own projects in various fields.

Today the German-Russian Exchange (NRO) is working in such main fields as:

(1) volunteering and youth exchange: volunteering in St. Petersburg and international internships in Russia for Europeans, volunteering in Europe for Russian participants, Au Pair for Russians in Germany and Austria;

(2) organisation of study trips to St. Petersburg and other Russian cities as well as to Germany and other European countries;

(3) organisation of international public events in St. Petersburg on the topics of European civil society, such as the regular German Speaking Club, annual Autumn Meetings, participation in the annual German Week in St. Petersburg and other events.

The German-Russian Exchange invites to cooperate everyone who shares its values and is interested in international exchanges.
