Voluntary Social Year in Germany - Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ)
Information
Projects
We offer projects in various fields of social work. All projects are situated in Nordrhein-Westfalen (a part of Germany in the west, between Bonn, Münster and Bielefeld).
Projects that we can offer:
• Homes for people with handicaps
• Local support for elderly/handicapped people
Looking after the Volunteers
The volunteers take part in 25 seminar-days. In the seminars German volunteers and those from abroad meet and share their experiences in work and life.
We visit the volunteers at the projects at least once a year. When a conflict arises we organize crisis intervention.
Conditions for the Programme
1 The volunteers are between 18 and 26 years old
2 Participants are willing to engage as volunteers rather than finding a job.
3 Knowledge of german language is obligatory, the level depends on the requirements of the project
4 The volunteers should enjoy getting in contact with other people.
5 The programme lasts for one year. It starts in September and ends in August of the following year. The next term starts on September 1st, 2010. It ends on August 31st, 2011
6 The working hours are 39 1/2 hours per week. This usually means 7 or 8 hours per day.
7 The volunteers should be prepared to work on some of the weekends (maximum: every second weekend). If weekend work is required, the volunteers will have a compensation in the following week.
8 Each of the volunteers receives pocket money (165,00 EUR per month).
9 The volunteers have free accomodation. The project offers a room with furniture and a possibility to cook.
10 The volunteers have free food. Some of the projects do not offer meals, but pay an equivalent sum of money instead.
11 Insurance contributions will be paid for illness, accident and third part liability during working hours.
12 The volunteers have 26 days of holiday.
Cooperation with the Partnerorganizations & Registration
We ask our partners to publicise the programme. We agree on registration and application procedures with each organization. Our Partner organizations are responsible for the appropriate information, selection and preparation of the volunteers.
The best time for us to receive the applications is January to Feb. 28th. . This gives us enough time to find suitable projects. Applications that come later are welcomed as long as we have free places. We try to respect the wishes of the applicants and find a suitable project for them. During the placement process we will want to conduct an interview with the applicant via telephone!
We hope we have provided all the essential information about the FSJ. If you have further questions, please contact us.

IJGD (Internationale Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste)
IJGD is a supporter of international youth work and provides voluntary services for young people from various countries.
The organization was founded right after and still under the impression of World War II, in order to create international understanding and peace. The intention of the young volunteers who founded IJGD was: to find new ways of social behavior in breaking down barriers between people because of their cultural, social and racial differences. The first organized Camps with international volunteers took place in 1948. They targeted the reconstruction of damages left by the war, both in a more material and in socio-political regard.
IJGD understands its work as step to a better understanding between people and as a contribution of young volunteers from all countries for the preservation of peace. The main emphasis is based on self-organization of group life by working and living together on a democratic basis, internationalism and emancipation of the sexes. Voluntary work for common good also forms the aims of IJGD.
Today IJGD organizes more than 120 international workcamps in Germany each year. They are attended by more than 2000 volunteers coming from all over the world. About 600 volunteers are sent to workcamps abroad.
IJGD also offer long term voluntary service opportunities through the Voluntary Social Year, the Voluntary Ecological Year , the Voluntary Year in the preservation of historic buildings, the European Voluntary Service for young people. People over 27 years of age are invited to our Midterm-Voluntary-Service “27+”. Volunteers may serve in Germany or abroad.
Today ijgd is organizing its work through five offices which are working in different regions.
