“Bridge It” is a public platform for organising international volunteer, youth, expert, educational and activist exchanges of various formats. We help to strengthen peace, friendship and harmony between the people of Russia and other countries, contribute to the civil society development through international exchanges and support for civil initiatives in Russia and Europe.
Our organization was founded in 1992 by a group of activists and volunteers from Germany who came to Russia in order to support vulnerable social groups during the difficult times of the early 1990s. Although it was already registered as an independent organization in 1996, from 1992 to 2021 it bore the name of the German-Russian Exchange St. Petersburg, same as the partner organization that was founded in 1992 in Berlin (which was in May 2021 declared as undesirable in the Russian Federation). To avoid confusion of our organization with the Berlin one, our organization was renamed into the “Bridge It” in June 2021. The English version of the title “Bridge It” was taken from the programme implemented in the 2010s by the group of civic trainers from our organization together with MitOst (Berlin), Orbita (Riga) and other NGOs for the international projects development. We are continuing to work for the building the bridges between civil societies from different countries, and therefore, we are proud to have this title now.
Throughout the years of history people, priorities, projects, styles and workloads have changed in it, and legal entities have been registered and re-registered. However, the main mission and tasks have remained the same since its foundation: it still aims to develop international exchanges and volunteer work, to support civil initiatives and organisations that are the basis of an open and democratic society in Europe.
For almost 30 years of work, a huge number of short-term and long-term volunteers, experts, journalists, students, schoolchildren and activists have participated, who are now working on their own projects in various fields.
Today Bridge It is working in such main fields as:
(1) volunteering and youth exchange: organization of ESC volunteering and international internships in Russia for Europeans, assistance of Russian participants of volunteering programmes in Europe and Au Pair in Germany and Austria;
(2) organisation of study trips to St. Petersburg and other Russian cities as well as to Germany and other European countries;
(3) organisation of international public events in St. Petersburg on the topics of European civil society, such as the regular German Speaking Club, annual Autumn Meetings, participation in the annual German Week in St. Petersburg and other events.
We invite everyone who shares its values and is interested in international exchanges to cooperate with us!
